Docents
Docents share with the public their knowledge of women artists and their contributions to the history of art. They give tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions to adult and school groups, and greet visitors at the Information Desk. Qualified applicants participate in an eight-month, once-a-week training program. The curriculum is equivalent to a college-level comprehensive survey course of women artists from the 16th century to the present.
The docent-training program provides in-depth coverage of artists represented
in NMWA's permanent collection, a history of the museum, education
theory, and techniques for giving effective public tours. Upon completion of the program, docents participate
in ongoing training sessions and work at the Information Desk for
one three-and-a-half hour shift per week. We ask that each candidate make
a two-year commitment to the museum.
NMWA docents are vibrant and dedicated people who share a common interest in furthering the mission of the museum. They enjoy discounts at the Museum Shop and Café, receive free or reduced admission to public programs and invitations to exhibition openings and special tours, and have the opportunity to meet artists and curators.
