Washington, D.C.—Celebrating the tenth year of its Literary Series, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) proudly presents a reading, reception, and book signing with novelist Joyce Carol Oates, Friday, January 27, at 7 p.m., in the museum’s performance hall, 1250 New York Avenue, NW, Washington D.C.
Ms. Oates will read from her newest book The Female of the Species: Tales of Mystery and Suspense, a collection of gripping and disturbing short stories dealing with women confronting the evil around them and surprised by the evil they find within themselves. Oates demonstrates—chillingly—why the females of the species—be they six-year-old girls, seemingly devoted wives, or aging mothers—are by nature more deadly than the males.
A recipient of the National Book Award and the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction, Oates has written some of the most enduring fiction of our time, including the national bestsellers We Were the Mulvaneys, The Falls, and Blonde, which was nominated for the National Book Award. She is the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University, and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1978. Oates is the author of more than 70 books including novels, short story collections, poetry volumes, plays, literary criticism, and essays.
Support for the Literary Series is provided by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, The Humanities Council of Washington, D.C., and Prince Charitable Trusts.
Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for seniors 60 and over,
