Join the Guerrilla Girls—the self-proclaimed “Conscience of the Art World”—for
one of their signature illustrated PowerPoint presentations, filled with “facts, humor
and fake fur.” The masked crusaders formed in 1985 to bring attention to women artists
and artists of color while exposing the white-male dominated art establishment. The
Guerrilla Girls assumed the names of dead women artists and wore gorilla masks in public,
concealing their identities to focus on the issues of sexism and race in the culture at large.
Between 1985 and 2000, close to 100 women, working collectively and anonymously,
produced posters, billboards, public actions, books and other projects to make feminism
funny and fashionable.
The Guerrilla Girls will talk about the background of the group itself, some of the activist efforts they’ve done in the past, and their ongoing efforts to raise awareness for greater gender and racial equality in the art world. The presentation ends with a Q & A session followed by a reception of afternoon tea fare.
