WASHINGTON—The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) located in Washington, D.C. has lent 20 works from its extraordinary collection to the exhibition L’Arte delle Donne dal Rinascimento al Surrealismo (Women in Art from Renaissance to Surrealism) on view at the Palazzo Reale in Milan from December 5, 2007 through March 9, 2008. The landmark European exhibition, organized by the Palazzo Reale, the City of Milan, the Milan Council Department of Culture, and Artematica in collaboration with NMWA and the NMWA’s Milanese committee, Gli Amici del National Museum of Women in the Arts, presents more than 200 works by 110 artists.
“We are extremely honored to have works from our collection included in this significant exhibition. This cultural exchange is a unique opportunity to showcase to audiences around the world the work that women artists have been producing for five centuries. We hope this is the beginning of many more collaborations with Italy and other countries to celebrate the achievements of women artists,” said Mrs. Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, NMWA founder and chair of the board of trustees.
Among the works on loan to the Palazzo Reale are: Judith Leyster’s, The Concert, Berthe Morisot’s Lake at Bois de Boulogne, Gabriele Münter’s Staffelsee in Autumn, and Rachel Ruysch’s Roses, Convolvulus, Poppies and Other Flowers in an Urn on a Stone Ledge.
In its 20 years, the Women’s Museum has presented more than 200 exhibitions and thousands of community-based programs all dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in the visual, performing, and literary arts.
Founded in 1981 and opened in 1987, NMWA remains the only museum in the world dedicated solely to celebrating women in the arts. Its permanent collection contains some 3,500 works by
more than 800 artists, ranging from the 16th century to the present day. The museum conducts programs for diverse audiences and maintains a Library and Research Center. NMWA is located at 1250 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C., in a landmark historic building near the White House.
In 2007, NMWA presented two landmark exhibitions, Italian Women Artists from Renaissance to Baroque and WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution, that range respectively from the 16th century and the beginning of women artists in the Western tradition, to the 20th-century
movement that has transformed the artistic, social, sexual, and political roles of women worldwide.
