Each time a committee hosts an exhibition, sponsors a seminar, underwrites a scholarship, or provides educational materials to a school, NMWA's circle of friends expands.

Friends become members. Artists and collectors become inclined to lend or bequeath works to the museum. And girls and young women become inspired to create the pieces that will grace NMWA's walls and fill its halls with music, drama, and knowledge in years to come.

What It Takes to Become a National or International Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts
Along with supporting the success of existing committees, the office of the Director of National and International Affairs is dedicated to working with groups of individual supporters of the arts who are interested in forming new committees. In addition to NMWA staff, committee members in other areas can be valuable mentors as you explore the obligations and opportunities involved in forming and maintaining a committee.

The Fine Print
Once it is agreed that a group has a critical mass, the collective skills, and a strong commitment to support the mission and goals of NMWA, the next step is to formalize the relationship by incorporating as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization (national committees only), and completing an affiliation agreement with NMWA. The Affiliation Agreement grants an exclusive charter to the committee to serve as the representative of NMWA in its state, city, region, or country. It sets forth standards of affiliation and procedures for revocation of charter. It describes the responsibilities of directors and members, as well as detailing obligations regarding bylaws and fiscal operations, insurance, liability, and indemnification.

While national and international committees are individually incorporated and are legally separate entities from NMWA, their sole purpose is to further the goals of NMWA. All
committee members must be members of NMWA. Committees are accountable to NMWA and agree to conform to all of the terms and provisions of the NMWA bylaws.

Help NMWA Rewrite the History of Art
By museum standards, NMWA and its national and international committees are still a young endeavor. But in little more than two decades, we have made great strides. Deservedly considered one of the world’s great museums, NMWA owes no small part of its greatness to the support of its committees and dedicated members. We encourage you to join in this great work. The reward for your efforts will be the inspiration of both artists and their audiences for not just decades, but centuries to come..
