Exploring Art: A Student Guide to Viewing Museum Exhibitions makes
the experience of visiting a museum meaningful and fun. For upper elementary
and middle school levels, the handbook introduces basic subject categories
(portraits, narratives, abstract art, etc.) and vocabulary to promote understanding
of the visual arts. The accompanying Teacher’s Guide to Exploring Art
includes tips for taking students to a museum, suggestions for pre- and
post-visit activities, ideas for guided discussion in a museum, resources
for learning more about art and women artists, and suggestions for classroom
activities.
Designed so that a teacher, parent, or leader with little or no experience
in the arts can become comfortable with the subject, the guides provide
adults with tools to enhance motivation and present stimulating and engaging
lessons about women in the arts. Although these materials are intended to
be used in conjunction with a visit to a museum or arts center, they can
be used independently in a classroom.
