The National Museum of Women in the Arts works in partnership with Girl
Scouts of the U.S.A. to produce arts education materials that enhance the
Girl Scout program. These materials strengthen girls’ understanding of the
art world and encourage an appreciation of the important contributions that
women have made to the arts.
Discovering Art: A Museum Guide for Girl Scouts
Designed for Brownie and Junior levels, Discovering Art is a 23-page,
full-color, self-guiding tour of the visual arts that focuses on women artists.
The book, which can be used as a learning tool for a visit to any museum,
gallery, or art center, introduces Girl Scouts to various types of art,
including portraiture, narrative and landscape painting, abstract art, and
sculpture. Because of the workbook format, one book is recommended for each
girl. $5 each.
The Leader’s Guide to Discovering Art
This new book provides guidance for leaders conducting the Discovering
Art patch program and is designed so that a leader with little or no
experience in the arts can become comfortable with the subject. It supplies
thematic lesson plans, tips for conducting museum visits, and suggestions
for pre- and post-visit activities. Lessons are geared toward various age
groups. $15 each.
National Museum of Women in the Arts Discovering Art Patch
Girl Scouts who complete Discovering Art and the activities in the
companion Leader’s Guide are eligible for the patch. $.80 each.
Project Pathways
Project Pathways workbooks help Girl Scouts fulfill Try-its, Badges, or
Interest Project requirements with an emphasis on women artists. Each contains
postcard reproductions of works from the permanent collection, information
about women artists, activities designed to inspire Girl Scouts to explore
the world of art, and a list of resources for continued learning.
Brownie, Junior, and Cadette/Senior Project Pathways. $20 each.
The Education Gallery offers changing exhibitions that give background and context
for special exhibitions or aspects of our permanent collection. It is often a starting point
for school and youth tours. The Education Gallery is also the site of the annual Bridging Communities exhibition of student artwork.
Guided tours must be arranged at least four weeks in advance. To request
