Event Description
In Relation
What do you get when two art museums committed to celebrating women artists collaborate? BMA x NMWA! This monthly talk show puts women artists and their artworks in conversation with each other, across two museums. Join educators from the Baltimore Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts—sometimes with artists and special guests—as they consider themes relevant to contemporary artists and you!
In this episode, educators from both museums welcome artist Tschabalala Self. Known for constructing grand-scale Black figures in collage-like canvases, Self’s works are made of found fabrics and fragments of her own recycled artworks. A selection of new and existing works by the artist will be on view in the BMA’s special exhibition Tschabalala Self: By My Self, open March 28 through September 19, 2021.
Educators and the artist will also discuss story quilts in each museum’s collection by Faith Ringgold. Throughout her 70-plus year career, Ringgold has created figures that address social, political, and racial issues poignantly. Self identifies Ringgold’s work as an influence on her practice.
BMA x NMWA: In Relation will livestream Tuesday, March 9, at 12 p.m. EDT. The live stream will be available on both the BMA and NMWA Facebook pages.
