National Museum of Women in the Arts

Close Encounters: Jennie Augusta Brownscombe and Kirsten Justesen

A photograph shows the nude artist sitting in a metal grocery cart. It is located on a paved road in a flat, empty landscape under a gray, misty sky. Her back to the viewer, the light-skinned, brunette woman holds her raised arms in a wide V-shape, suggesting joy or abandon.

Event Description

Close Encounters: Jennie Augusta Brownscombe and Kirsten Justesen

While our building is currently closed for renovation, NMWA continues to offer dynamic programs to keep you connected to the museum and our collection. This fall join Deborah Gaston, NMWA’s director of education and interpretation, for four talks that ask, “What questions, conversations, and viewpoints surface when the art historical past meets the present?”

This week’s talk considers narrative art to explore the gendered associations of public and private spaces that shape(d) women’s lives. We will examine Jennie Augusta Brownscombe, Love’s Young Dream (1887) and Kirsten Justesen, Lunch for a Landscape (1975/2009).
