Event Description

About the Event

Firsthand Experiences bring contemporary artists together with learners ages 13 and up for hands-on programs that combine making, gallery conversations, and discovery.

Experiment with color and texture to make abstract monotypes and sew a luminous, long-stitch journal. Art supplies provided. No experience required.

About the Artist Instructor:

Through book arts, collage, printmaking, and creative writing, Jamila Zahra Felton (she/her) explores memory, identity, love, self-care, and Black futures. Jamila’s artist books and zines are in NMWA’s collection: her artist book The Deep End: Or, Some of Us Learned How to Swim (2016) was included in the exhibition DMV Color (2019–20), which can be viewed online. Jamila is a member of Pyramid Atlantic and was its inaugural Gregory Vita Paper Arts Resident. Jamila also blossoms as a librarian and educator and lives with her family in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
