Firsthand Experiences bring contemporary artists together with learners ages 13 and up for hands-on programs that combine making, gallery conversations, and discovery.

In this session, learn about the history and engineering behind pop-up books. Create your own with the instruction and encouragement of published author and acclaimed artist Carol Barton.

About the Artist Instructor:

Carol Barton is a painter, book artist, curator, author, and teacher who has organized both local and national exhibitions, including the Smithsonian Institution’s Science and the Artist’s Book. Her work is exhibited internationally and is in numerous collections, including those of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Barton has taught at elementary, high school, and university levels, and has conducted adult workshops at art centers internationally. She was on the faculty at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia for 25 years and formerly taught at the Corcoran School of Arts and Design in Washington, D.C. and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Barton has held residencies at the Bogliasco Foundation in Italy, Sacatar Foundation in Brazil, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts’s studio center in France. Her books, The Pocket Paper Engineer, Volumes 1, 2 and 3, are how-to guides to making pop-up cards and pages. She is currently working on a new series of landscape paintings.
