Event Description

Happy Birthday, Judith Leyster!

Join staff of the National Museum of Women in the Arts for a virtual happy hour to celebrate Judith Leyster‘s birthday! We will make a specialty cocktail in her honor, share artworks and stories, and explore the museum’s collection and archives for all things Judith.

Registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about how to join.

Special Guests:

Frima Fox Hofrichter is a professor of the History of Art and Design at Pratt Institute, and author of Judith Leyster, A Woman Painter in Holland’s Golden Age, Oxford University Press’s Online Bibliography on Gender and Art in the 17th Century, and numerous related articles and other women artists of the 17th century. She is also a co-author of Janson’s History of Art and most recently co-editor of Women, Aging and Art, A Crosscultural Anthology.

Andra ‘AJ’ Johnson will be teaching us how to make a specially created cocktail inspired by Judith Leyster. Johnson has been part of the DMV restaurant scene for years and currently serves as the Bar Director for the Serenata/Zumo cocktail bar in La Cosecha. She is a co-founder of DMV Black Restaurant Week and her forthcoming book, White Plates, Black Faces, tells the stories of people of color in the restaurant industry.

Featured Cocktail: Lodestar Shandy

Get ready for the event by preparing to create the specialty cocktail inspired by Judith Leyster.

Ingredients for Cocktail:

  • 1 oz Bols Genever
  • 0.5 oz St. Germain Elderflower
  • 0.25 oz Pimm’s No. 1
  • 2 oz Heineken
  • 1 oz apple-rosemary simple syrup (recipe below)
    • Requires rosemary, red apples, sugar, and water
  • 0.5 oz lemon juice
  • 1 sprig of fresh rosemary

Tools: shaker tin, strainer, ice, bar spoon, bottle opener

Glassware: Tom Collins or highball glass

To make the simple syrup: Heat equal parts water and sugar on the stove on low heat. Once sugar is incorporated into the water, raise temperature to medium heat, and add rosemary and quartered red apples. Let steep for about 15–20 minutes. Strain off rosemary and apples, and let cool.

Ingredients for Mocktail:

  • 3 oz apple-rosemary simple syrup (recipe above)
  • 2 oz still or sparkling water
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz lime juice

Combine apple-rosemary simple syrup, lemon juice, and lime juice, and shake well. Strain into glass. Top with still water, or sparkling water if preferred.
