Close Encounters: Lavinia Fontana and Hung Liu

While our building is currently closed for renovation, NMWA continues to offer dynamic programs to keep you connected to the museum and our collection. This fall join Deborah Gaston, NMWA’s director of education and interpretation, for four talks that ask, “What questions, conversations, and viewpoints surface when the art historical past meets the present?”

This week’s talk on portraiture considers the relationship between female identity and gender roles defined by society. We will examine Lavinia Fontana, Portrait of a Noblewoman (ca. 1580) and Hung Liu, Shan-Mountain (2012).
