About the Event
Firsthand Experiences bring contemporary creators together with learners ages 13 and older for hands-on programs that combine creative arts, conversations, and discovery.
About the workshop series: Explore concepts and techniques inspired by works in Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California. Each workshop in the series will explore different works and ways of making. Attend one or multiple sessions! All materials will be provided; no experience necessary.
During this workshop, artist, educator, and curator Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell will introduce participants to chigiri-e and guide participants through creating their own torn paper collages. Drawing inspiration from the exhibition, participants will create their own quilt-like compositions.
About the Event
Zsudayka Nzinga (she, her, hers) is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator based in Washington, D.C., who creates collaged paintings and art installations examining Black culture and American history. She received an MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been featured at the Phillips Collection (Washington, D.C.), Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum (Annapolis, MD), National Liberty Museum (Philadelphia), the U.S. Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire, SCOPE Art Fair (Miami), and more.
