About the Event

Firsthand Experiences bring contemporary artists together with learners ages 13 and up for hands-on programs that combine art-making, gallery conversations, and discovery.

Learn to create beautiful textured papers with watercolor, salt, and plastic wrap. Make patterned paste paper with tempera. Experiment with coffee stained sheets. All papers can be used for collage and book making projects. Art supplies provided. No experience required.

About the Artist Instructor

Born in Chicago, Adjoa J. Burrowes is a mixed-media artist, author, and educator who has made the D.C. metropolitan area her home since 2000. She has presented in group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, including the current Black Artists of D.C. group exhibition at the James E. Lewis Museum of Art and Holding Ground exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Burrowes’s artworks are represented in collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. Burrowes has published several children’s books, including Grandma’s Purple Flowers (2000). She holds a BFA in printmaking from Howard University and an MA in arts education from the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design at George Washington University.
