Event Description

Happy Birthday, Marisol!

Join staff of the National Museum of Women in the Arts for a virtual happy hour to celebrate Marisol‘s birthday! We will make a specialty cocktail in her honor, share artworks and stories, and explore the museum’s collection and archives for all things Marisol.

Registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about how to join.

Special Guests:

Jessica Beck joined The Warhol as assistant curator in 2014 and currently serves as its Milton Fine Curator of Art. Her recent curatorial projects include Andy Warhol: My Perfect Body (2016) and Devan Shimoyama: Cry, Baby (2018), the artist’s first solo museum exhibition. In 2019, she co-curated Kim Gordon’s first solo museum exhibition in North America, Kim Gordon: Lo-Fi Glamour. Beck has published with the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cantor Center for the Arts, Gagosian Quarterly, and Burlington Magazine.

Andra ‘AJ’ Johnson will be teaching us how to make a specially created cocktail inspired by a Marisol artwork in the NMWA collection. Johnson has been part of the DMV restaurant scene for years and currently serves as the Bar Director for the Serenata/Zumo cocktail bar in La Cosecha. She is a co-founder of DMV Black Restaurant Week and her forthcoming book, White Plates, Black Faces, tells the stories of people of color in the restaurant industry.

Featured Cocktail: Venezolana

Prepare for the event by making sure you’re ready to create the specialty cocktail inspired by Marisol.

Ingredients for Cocktail:

  • 1.5 oz Santa Teresa 1796 Solera Rum*
  • 1 oz espresso (preferred)/cold brew/drip coffee
  • .75 oz guava nectar/juice
  • .75 oz pineapple juice
  • .25 oz lime juice
  • 3 habanero peppers; sliced lengthwise, seeds removed from 1/2 of the pieces
  • 3 espresso beans for garnish

Preferred Glassware: rocks glass

Additional Tools: shaker tin, strainer, ice to shake and to put in the cocktail

*Just remove to make into a mocktail!
