Workshop One: I Am!

Join educators from National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) and Art Educators of New Jersey (AENJ) for a mini-series of synchronous, online, hands-on workshops. Learn how discussing and making works of art can support student learning and social emotional growth. These workshops connect to these Social Emotional Learning themes: “Connecting to Artist’s Self” and “Identity, Place, and Personal Growth.”

Workshop One: I Am! participants will take a closer look at the self by applying strategies that extend the use of social emotional vocabulary tied to awareness and understanding. They will consider the interplay between the self and social structures, as well as the relationships created between them. Self-portrait bookmaking and writing prompts will engage participants in self-reflection and investigate multiple points of view.

As a participant, you will:

• Explore and discuss artwork from NMWA’s collection.
• Be able to name #5WomenArtists.
• Think deeply about and practice the following Social Emotional Learning strategies:
  • Self-awareness,
  • Self-management,
  • Social awareness,
  • Relationship skills, and
  • Responsible decision-making.
• Practice Harvard Project Zero Thinking Routines to foster critical thinking skills.
• Consider cross-curricular lesson extensions applicable to your teaching context.
• Create an original work of art—an artist’s book inspired by NMWA’s Art, Books, and Creativity arts integration curriculum and the museum’s extensive collection of artists’ books.
• Connect with art educators from around the country.
• Receive ready-to-use, adaptable resources developed by NMWA’s educators.

Special guest teacher Tenley Escoffery will also share connections and lessons that integrate thinking routines into adaptable curricular extensions for students and self-reflective practices for the educator.

Registration:

You will receive a recommended supply list and a Zoom meeting link in advance of each workshop you register to attend.

Designed for all levels of art educators. Lessons learned and resources provided can be adapted for virtual or in-person instruction. Register for one session or both depending on your interest and commitments. To attend both workshops, you must register for each workshop individually. Tenley Marshall Escoffery, BA, Ramapo College, MFA, William Paterson University. Adv. Cert Ed. Leadership, Long Island University is an artist educator dedicated to sharing the magic of creativity and imagination through art, nature, and yoga. She currently is a full-time New Jersey Public School teacher, teaching Kindergarten through 4th grade art since 2001. Tenley is currently involved with several organizations such as the Arts Educators of New Jersey; serving on the Advisory Council and serving Local Historical Renovation Projects.
