Dear Miss Kahlo,
Enclosed you will find David
Porter’s letter to you, (explaining why
I am writing to you,) which I received
to-day.
There remain only 6 days
until I leave Mexico for the United
States – not to Washington D.C.
as had previously been my plans,
but to St. Louis, Mo. Due to the
lack of time in which to arrange
the proper and necessary papers
from the Mexican and American
governments, in order to export
a painting of yours – I sincerely
regret the impossibility of my
being able to bring one of your
paintings across the border. I

sincerely hope that you will be suf-
ficiently interested in the show, “The
Women,” to arrange the necessary
papers and send one of your paintings
to David Porter in Washington D.C.
As I will be in Mexico City but
a few brief hours, I deeply regret
that I will not be able to see your
paintings. I have long been a great
admirer of them as I have long
been a great admirer of Mexican
art.
When I return to the United States,
I am taking with me twenty oil
paintings of the young Mexican,
Ernesto Linares of Ajijic, Jalisco.
He is an abstract painter who has
achieved considerable acclaim
in the United States with a show
at the David Porter Galleries in

January of this year, and is now
having a successful exhibition in
the San Francisco Museum of art
this month. I would have greatly
enjoyed the opportunity to acquaint
you with the paintings of this Linares,
who like all young Mexicans has
been influenced by the works of you
established artists.
Hoping that in my not too-
distant return to Mexico I may not
only be of service to you, but also
to have the honor of seeing your
latest paintings – and hoping also
that you will soon be able to send
one of your paintings to David Porters’
show, “The Women,”
I remain sincerely yours,
Charmaine [illegible] S. Levy
