Gabrielle de Veaux Clements

Philadelphia-born artist Gabrielle de Veaux Clements was a talented painter, muralist, and printmaker.
A painted portrait of a light-skinned older woman with white hair pulled back from her face. She is portrayed from the waist up against a dark background. She wears a black dress with a white sash. A bouquet of blue flowers decorates the left side of the sash. She gazes left of the frame.

Ellen Day Hale

Ellen Day Hale was among the wave of American artists, both men and women, who traveled to Europe for training in the last quarter of the 19th century.
A painting of a light skinned, older woman who is seated on a black chair. She wears a large, black hat, and a white turtleneck that is barely visible beneath a black coat and black feathered shawl. The background, rendered in visible, thin painstrokes, is grey and brown.

Mary Nimmo Moran

After immigrating to the U.S. from her native Scotland, Mary Nimmo Moran produced a large number of prints that were celebrated for their boldness and originality.
Black and white portrait of a woman with light skin. Seated and staring straight at the camera, she wears her hair up, with curls framing her face. Around her shoulders she wears a white shawl, and has a delicate earring in her right ear. Her eyes are clear and she smiles slightly.
